ORSA President, 1983
David Schrady was the 32nd President of ORSA. He was Treasurer of ORSA (1976- 1979), and Honorary Treasurer of IFORS (1988-1997).
During his long career at the Naval Postgraduate School (since 1965), he served as Distinguished Professor, Provost (1980-1987), Dean of the Information and Policy Sciences Division, and Chairman of the Department of Operations Research and Administrative Sciences. He was cited as an outstanding researcher in Naval warfare and in the application of inventory theory to large –scale supply systems.
Schrady’s research interests are in logistics modeling, military readiness, and command and control.
While Treasurer of ORSA he was general chair of the 1977 TIMS/ORSA National meeting in San Francisco. That year, ORSA was faced with the possibility of insolvency. He helped set in place new revenue and cost control procedures that resolved the problem Schrady’s contributions also included chairing the ORSA Education Committee, helping to organize the initial ORSA/TIMS Visiting Lecture Program, and writing ORSA’s Careers in OR booklet.
As Honorary Treasurer of IFORS, he served on the Administrative Committee and ensured the fiscal soundness of four of the triennial conferences.
Schrady is a Fellow of INFORMS and a Fellow of the Military Operations Research Society. He received the Wanner Medal of the Military Operations Research Society (1984), the Chief of Naval Operations’ US Navy Superior Civilian service Award, (1987), the Goodeve Medal of the British Operational Research Society (1992), the Kimball Medal (1994), and the Jacinto Steinhardt Memorial Award (2007).
David Schrady retired from the Naval Postgraduate School faculty in 2006 and continues to be active in a number of professional roles.
