A charter member of TIMS, Dr. Kozmetsky served as its 5th President. George Kozmetsky was executive associate for economic affairs in The University of Texas System. He also was chairman of the Advisory Board and a senior research fellow of IC2 Institute. In addition, Dr. Kozmetsky was professor in the Management and Computer Science Departments, held the Murray S. Johnson Chair in Economics, as well as the IC2 E. D. Walker Centennial Fellowship, all at The University of Texas at Austin. And was professor in the Department of Medicine of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
From 1966 to 1982, Dr. Kozmetsky was dean of the College of Business Administration and the Graduate School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Currently, he serves as chairman of the Society for Design and Process Science, and is a member of the Founding Board of Directors of the American Society for Education and Economic Development (AmSEED).
Dr. Kozmetsky was the co-founder and former executive vice president of Teledyne, Inc. An acknowledged expert in high technology and venture capital, he helped develop over 100 technology-based companies. He serves on numerous boards including Gulf Oil, La Quinta, Heizer Inc., and Dell Corporation. Dr. Kozmetsky also served state and federal governments as an advisor, commissioner, and panel member of various task forces, commissions, and policy boards. He regularly testified on business and technology issues before state and federal legislators.
Dr. Kozmetsky was one of nine recipients of the 1993 National Medal of Technology. His other awards include the 1987-88 Dow Jones Award from the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business, the 1988 Thomas Jefferson Award from the Technology Transfer Society, and the Entrepreneurial Leadership Award from the MIT Enterprise Forum. He was inducted into the Texas Business Hall of Fame for his business contributions to the State of Texas and was named Austin’s 1992 Entrepreneur of the Year Supporter of Entrepreneurship.
Dr. Kozmetsky died in 2003 at age 85.
