ORSA President, 1975
Jack Borsting was the 24th President of ORSA. He was the E. Morgan Stanley Professor of Business Administration and Executive Director of the Center for Telecommunications Management (CTM), at the Marshall School of Business of the University of Southern California. From 1988 to 1993, he was Dean of the School of Business Administration, and Robert Dockson Professor of Business Administration at USC. From 1983 to 1988, he was Dean of the School of Business Administration and Professor of Management Science at the University of Miami.
Dr. Borsting was Assistant Secretary of the Defense (Comptroller) from 1980 to 1983. In this role, he was responsible for the department's management systems and budget preparation. Prior to this position, he was affiliated with the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, for twenty years, serving first as professor and Chair of the Department of Operations Research and Administrative Sciences, and then as Provost from 1974 to 1980.
Jack Borsting is a Fellow of INFORMS. He received the Kimball Medal in 1982. He also served ORSA as Council Member and Secretary of the Society. As Chairman of the Educating Committee he started ORSA’s Visiting Lecture Program. He was also President of the Military Operations Research Society (MORS) and recipient of its Steinhardt Prize. and the recipient of its Vance Warner Award for Distinguished Service to the Profession. In addition, he has been honorary Treasurer of the International Federation of Operations Research Societies (IFORS), a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and of MORS, and a Trustee of the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA). In 1982, Dr. Borsting received the Distinguished Service Award from Oregon State University; and has been twice awarded the US Department of Defense's Medal for Distinguished Public Service. In 2005, he was designated an Alumni Fellow by the University of Oregon.
Dr. Borsting has served on the corporate boards of Northrop Grumman Corporation, Security First Trust, PLATO Learning, Inc., Storer Communications, McDonnell Douglas Finance Corporation, Coast Savings Bank, Sun Bank of Miami, Ivax Diagnostics, and Whitman Education Group. He is past Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Orthopedic Hospital Foundation, and is a Trustee of the Rose Hills Foundation. Dr. Borsting served as Lead Governor of the American Stock Exchange and is currently a board member of Metropolitan Life Investors. He also served as a member of the Army Science Board.
