BALTIMORE, MD, May 24, 2025 – Most anti-human trafficking efforts focus on breaking up sex sales; however, new research in the INFORMS journal Manufacturing & Service Operations Management is turning its attention to where trafficking truly begins – recruitment. Using machine learning to analyze millions of online ads, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have uncovered patterns that link deceptive job offers to sex trafficking networks. By mapping the connections between recruitment and sales locations, the study reveals a hidden supply chain – one that can now be exposed and interrupted earlier in the trafficking process.

DETROIT — After a year of getting hammered by the pandemic, a semiconductor shortage and storms that snarled Dana Inc.’s global supply chain, the supplier is reaching for a new playbook.
On Wednesday, Johnson & Johnson acknowledged that a huge batch of vaccines—enough for 15 million doses—had to be tossed out after it was found to have been contaminated during the production process. Soon afterward, several outlets reported that the company producing the vaccine at that Baltimore facility, Emergent BioSolutions, had been cited multiple times before for quality control issues. The sheer number of doses that were discarded, and the idea of a “contamination” of a COVID vaccine, has raised plenty of questions.
BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Robert Kramer, the CEO of Emergent BioSolutions, said in an interview with CNBC that he wanted to clear up “misunderstandings and misconceptions” about what happened at the company’s Baltimore facility last month when millions of Johnson & Johnson vaccine doses were reportedly ruined.
