BALTIMORE, MD, May 24, 2025 – Most anti-human trafficking efforts focus on breaking up sex sales; however, new research in the INFORMS journal Manufacturing & Service Operations Management is turning its attention to where trafficking truly begins – recruitment. Using machine learning to analyze millions of online ads, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have uncovered patterns that link deceptive job offers to sex trafficking networks. By mapping the connections between recruitment and sales locations, the study reveals a hidden supply chain – one that can now be exposed and interrupted earlier in the trafficking process.

New Research Provides Hope for Parkinson’s Disease Symptom Control

BALTIMORE, MD, September 12, 2023 – Finding the right medication regimen to treat Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a complex healthcare challenge. Wearable health trackers provide physicians with a detailed window into patients’ symptoms, but translating this complex data into useful treatment insights can be difficult. New research in the INFORMS journal Management Science accomplishes just that. Researchers found that combining wearable health tracker data with state-of-the-art algorithms results in promising treatment strategies that could improve PD patients’ outcomes.

At the end of July, Lupin Pharmaceuticals recalled two batches of Tydemy, a birth control drug that the company produces in India, when it was found to have reduced effectiveness. It was the company’s eighth product recall in just 18 months. Lupin was also forced to stop production at one of its Indian plants in 2022 after the FDA issued a warning letter last fall.

The intention is to have positive outcomes for patients, but new research forthcoming in the INFORMS journal Management Science finds that vertical integration is leading to higher costs and worse health outcomes, thanks to improperly aligned financial incentives.
