USA Cycling Awarded the 2025 INFORMS Edelman Award for Data-Driven Olympic Gold Strategy

BALTIMORE, MD, April 7, 2025 – INFORMS, the world’s largest association for professionals and students in operations research (O.R.), AI, analytics and data science, announced it has awarded USA Cycling its 2025 Franz Edelman Award for Achievement in Advanced Analytics, Operations Research and Management Science, for its use of operations research (O.R.) and analytics in elite sports performance. With Project 4:05, USA Cycling transformed race strategy and athlete preparation, enabling the Women’s Team Pursuit to win gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Carefully chosen wording can increase donations by over 300 percent

A forthcoming study in the INFORMS journal of Marketing Science, based on the psychology of sympathy, shows that small changes in the wording of a fundraising letter can increase donations by over 300 percent.

With over a million registered public charities in the United States, fundraising for good causes has become more difficult than ever. Annual events like Giving Tuesday increase overall giving, but also increase the competition for funds around those events.

Want to decipher whether or not a new hire will thrive in his position? Compare his emails to those of a coworker. According to a new study in the INFORMS journal of Management Science by INFORMS member Sameer Srivastava, the more similarities in language style, the better the fit. The study found that a new hire whose own emails are linguistically similar to his co-workers' messages is four times less likely to be fired than someone who never mimics the language style of his peers.

Mark S. Daskin: Clyde W. Johnson Collegiate Professor and chair, department of industrial and operations engineering, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.  For leadership and creative contributions to location optimization and its application to industrial, service, and medical systems.

Arkadi Nemirovski: John Hunter Chair and Professor, H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta.  For the development of efficient algorithms for large-scale convex optimization problems.

Sridhar R. Tayur: Ford Distinguished Research Chair Professor of Operations Management, Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh.  For developing and commercializing innovative methods to optimize supply chain systems.

Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to "engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature" and to "the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/ implementing innovative approaches to engineering education."

Web ads could shoot up 80% of online and offline retail sales

Online display ads can increase both online and offline retail sales, providing valuable insight for future marketing decisions, according to a new study in the INFORMS journal of Marketing Science. Researchers, including those from University of Rochester in the U.S., worked with an unnamed national apparel retailer to evaluate the effects of the retailer’s advertising.
