Unmasking Human Trafficking: New AI Research Reveals Hidden Recruitment Networks

BALTIMORE, MD, May 24, 2025 – Most anti-human trafficking efforts focus on breaking up sex sales; however, new research in the INFORMS journal Manufacturing & Service Operations Management is turning its attention to where trafficking truly begins – recruitment. Using machine learning to analyze millions of online ads, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have uncovered patterns that link deceptive job offers to sex trafficking networks. By mapping the connections between recruitment and sales locations, the study reveals a hidden supply chain – one that can now be exposed and interrupted earlier in the trafficking process.

Cause marketing, or marketing campaigns involving the combined efforts of a for-profit and non-profit organization, is commonly conducted in retail shops, restaurants, movie theaters and even online. Whether you are attending a "give back" night at Chipotle or a special charity event at a local boutique, cause marketing campaigns seem like the perfect situation for all parties involved. However, a new study in the INFORMS journal of Marketing Science finds that the effects of cause marketing are more complicated than that.

INFORMS a more than 12,000 member strong organization that promotes “best practices and advances in operations research, management science, and analytics” bases its awardees on their dedication to research pioneering. In this case, it was USAF’s Studies, Analysis and Assessments directorate which was recognized.
