The 2011 INFORMS Prize for the Teaching of OR/MS Practice is awarded to Jeffrey E. Kline. Mr. Jeffrey E. Kline has been the energy and inspiration behind the design, development and delivery of multiple courses that reach across the spectrum of teaching OR/MS Practice. From young Ensigns right out of the Naval Academy to Admirals receiving executive education on their way to new assignments, he brings his vast, hands-on OR/MS fleet experience and passion for making a difference. He effectively employs his unique skill set to educate and develop these officers so they can effectively practice OR/MS as they face fleet challenges today and make a difference in the Navy of tomorrow. Jeff has had a dramatic, long-lasting effect on his students and colleagues throughout his career. He not only teaches students in the classroom, but continually reaches out to “teach the teachers” through his electives course at the Naval War College and through his distance learning Masters of Systems Analysis Capstone Course. To capture his influence on the Practice of OR/MS, we believe the following quotation best summarizes Jeff: “… a phenomenal teacher, a tireless mentor and a large contributor to the military services’ “practical” use of Operations Research. He is shaping the next generation of Operations Research professionals.”
